DRESS IN CONFIDENCE

WHAT TO WEAR TO AN EVENT WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW THE DRESS CODE

Have you ever been invited to an event, birthday or an interview and you feel unsure (cue freak out) as to what the dress code is. You have a feeling it is cocktail but then it could be casual..but if you dress casually and turn up and everyone is dressed up you feel out of place and can't enjoy yourself to the fullest..I have felt that exact way and occasionally do still have a few mini freak outs..because sometimes it is stressful being a girl and knowing what to wear.

I recently attended the launch of the new Audi A4 at The Garden located at Jupiter's Hotel on the Gold Coast with my gal pal Megan. There was no specific dress code detailed on the invitation so we were left to come up with this ourselves.. Sometime's it can be refreshing having freedom to dress how you want to but other times it can leave you a little stressed/hoping you don't turn up looking completely out of place.

Some things I like to think of when styling an outfit for an event with no clue as to how to dress..

  • What type of event is it? When you know the type of event and who it is hosted by you can do some research on the brand, company or host to get an idea of what they encompass as a brand and therefore lead to an insight to the feel of the event.
  • Where is the event located? Location is a big help.. when you know the location you can also research the venue.. check out past images via instagram or Facebook and see what the vibe is.
  • What time of year is it? Dress to the season.. and also if you find out the event may be indoors you could style your outfit back with a blazer, jacket or long sleeves.
  • Will you have to do much walking? Sometimes fashionable shoes aren't practical when you may have to do a lot of walking to and from or during an event so try your best to wear something comfortable if you know this. If it's a standing event you have a little more leeway when wearing your favorite heels.

When you figure these few things out it can be a easier to decide what will be appropriate for the occasion. For me I feel most importantly you want to feel comfortable in what you wear, so don't ever feel pressured to dress a certain way to suit an event.. if you feel you want feel good in what you are wearing that is the key to owning the outfit and feeling confident in it!

We were driving around scouting different locations to shoot a few outfits during the week for the blog and came across this red garage door on someone's house.. We actually couldn't see a front door to ask them if it was okay to snap a few shots in front of it.. but their neighbour was quite friendly and entrained my a fashion shoot going on next door. So hopefully they didn't mind too much that we utilised a their pop of red as a feature wall in our shoot!

The red was the perfect contrast for this striped suit set by Finders Keepers The Label (coming soon). Now I would suggest wearing a top with this look if you aren't shooting a fashion look like we were here. I could see this styled back with a matching navy or cream top to tie everything together.

TURTLE NECK KNIT

Some days comfort wins over fashion.. but that doesn't mean we have to be unfashionable; we just have to dress fashionably comfortable. That was a tiny bit of a tounge twister but I am sure you all know what I am trying to get at here.

As you know I have a slight obsession with turtle necks in basically every style but especially in the cozy knit form. They are extremely on trend right now and it is easy to get your hands on one as they seem to be everywhere at the moment (in store, online.. you name it) and no wonder.. they are a really great piece to style back with many different outfit styles.

Finding the right fit and style for you is essential to feeling your best and most comfortable when wearing it. You want the knit to flatter your body shape so you must think about these few things before you purchase one.
-
Length: Finding the correct knit length in proportion to your height is a must. If you are taller you can get away with a longer length, but if you are shorter you don't want it to swamp your body and make you look shorter. I suggest going for a length that either hits your hips or just over or to lengthen your bottom half try a cropped style with a high waisted skirt or pants.

Neck Shape: Think a softer draping neck style or a more structured fit depending on personal preference of course. Tip: You don't want the neck style to make you look neckless and like you are a turtle popping your head out for air.

Colour: Picking a colour that suits your style, skin tone and one that will go back with what is already in your wardrobe is a must.

Texture: This may be dependant of where you are situated and what the climate is like. I find going for a simple knit rather than a busy one will allow you to wear it back with more. Think printed coats or cut out rough textured denim.

Featured is long sleeve Finders Keepers black knit..it has been one of my Winter staples this season it just seems to go back with so many pieces in my wardrobe and is one of the most comfortable knits I have ever worn. For me the soft falling neck, slightly fitted body & longer arm length are the perfect fit for me and my style.

TAKE A BREATH

The serenity was breath taking the afternoon I shot this look with Mum down by our local creek..only a slight cool breeze in the air & the way the afternoon sunshine hit the water was truly beautiful. I really enjoyed taking in my surroundings as we snapped this for the blog, it was really special.

I am sure I am not alone when I say I have been putting too much on my plate of things to do lately and feeling a little stressed as all my jobs, blogging & social life have been quite busy over the past few weeks and I have been wearing myself thin. I am going to be taking a breather just for the next week or so to get my head back in the game and get myself feeling fresh again to bring you beautiful people some fun, insightful & fashionable content.

Not to worry I will still be over on my Instagram @jeskaalee so you can catch all my going's on over there for the time being! Remember it's totally okay to take some time out if you are feeling stressed or like you just need to take a breath or break from something.

Besides for my love affair with the black and white items that are swamping my wardrobe currently I also have quite the collection of blue pieces.. and it is only fitting because it is my favorite colour after all! I looove all shades of blue ranging from sky blue, cobalt, cornflower, denim, cyan & the list goes on. I like to think it suits my skin & hair tone too so I really love wearing it.

I teamed this gorgeous cobalt blue Finders Keepers blazer back with a  white lace blouse & block white shorts for a fresh autumn look. It has a brightness about it which I am quite fond of as sometimes we all tend to go for darker colours in the cooler months.

MY TIP
This winter find a coat, blazer or item of clothing in your all time favorite colour and have it as your staple happy item you wear on those winter blue's days to cheer you up! x

Has it ever taken you a little longer to achieve something than you would have liked? or it took you longer than what society expects of you? This could be for anything a task, a job or something personal. I've got my hand up sky high for this! I bring up this topic because as of yesterday I now have my license (My Red P's).. and I am so damn happy about it & proud of myself for reaching my goal!

I've had people & friends a long way have their view or opinion about me not having my license for years.. "WHAT! you don't have your license, how do you even live"  or "It's so easy to drive, you should have your license" or  "I can't believe you still don't have your license". On a more positive note I've also had some really encouraging & positive views on it as well that I wish I focused on more in the beginning..

Of course everyone is going to have their own opinion or views about different things and that is totally okay but in beginning I let the negative remarks bother me about my license & make me feel bad about myself, rather then pushing them away & focusing on the positives & working toward my goal. It came to a point where I decided that the negative comments weren't doing me any good & yes it may have taken me longer than what society expects of me to obtain my license.. and now all I have to say is, so what, it's my journey & I will travel at what ever speed I like (of course sticking to the speed limit when driving.. hehe)

At the end of the day all that mattered was how that I viewed it myself & the goals I set to get me to where I wanted to be and I feel so proud of myself for being where I am today & really thankful for those few who supported me & helped me get there too! Applying this attitude to any situation by only focusing on the positives (this includes positive & constructive criticism too), rather than focusing on the negatives will be a lot better for you & getting where you want to be.

I thought I would end on a fashion note & keep it short & sweet ..everyone needs a Little White Dress (LWD) ..that's the opposite to the LBD but I think in summer every girl needs a LWD it's fresh & cool! especially this one by Finders Keepers with on trend cut outs!
